After
having been published in Outside magazine and the L. A. Times I had earned
enough stripes to request an assignment. I love dogs. So USA Today sent
me to Alaska on assignment to cover Susan Butcher, who was competing in
the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. She was following two wins in a row and a second
place the previous year. The only thing on her mind was her dogs. And the
only thing on her dogs mind was her. After witnessing her care and attention
throughout the 1,000 mile race, it was apparent why she won. Her dogs would
do anything for her. Just take a look at her lead dog on the bottom right
of this photo. Sheer devotion. |
