The original owners of La Crema walked into our design studio wanting to
sell only five thousand cases of wine, and they had no idea what type of
design they wanted. I've always wanted to create a typeface reminiscent
of Michelangelo — like a carving in granite — something stately,
Romanesque. The typography was hand-lettered with a ruler, thin black tape
and a calligraphy pen. Today, some twenty years later, Kendall-Jackson—who
owns the brand now—still uses the typeface.
